Wines

Today we bottle 18 wines each vintage. They are like a patchwork quilt a veritable mosaic of Maule, Maipo & Itata. They fall into the following categories:

The Parcels  (11 small vineyards bottled each on their own)

Each of these is produced from a small vineyard of between 3/4 of a hectare to about 2 1/2 hectares. Sauzal is perhaps the smallest with 185o bottles per vintage. Others are as many as 95oo bottles.

Single Ferment Series Wines

Single Ferment Series wines include fruit from more than one parcel or vineyard site and are (co-fermented) ¨in one single ferment ¨ Sometimes all the fruit does not enter the tank at same time and we simply stack on top of the fermenting tank when the next fruit is ripe -- one single ferment one single wine, no tweaking.

The Fieldcraft Bottlings

These are wines that simply put: usually don’t get made. They are tiny forgotten vineyards that defy the modern model of: necessary scale, practicality for harvest, proximity to transport, valid D.O. paperwork (Denomination of Origin)… and so forth.

These vineyards have everything against them, but they are diamonds in the rough. We began with the Phoenix after the bushfires in 2o17 and are now producing three with the 2018 harvest.

1 a Phoenix but with more Cariñena in the blend of principally Pais,

2 a Semillon on skins painstakingly separated from the Sauvignon that had crept into the vineyard.

The Parcels

We began making wine in 2001 and we have numbered each bottling since then with a lot number: Lot #1, Lot #2, Lot #3 and so on. Twenty years later our latest release of Old Vine Pale is Lot 103, that is to say the 103rd bottling since we began in 2001.

Our principal wines are yearly bottlings from 1o small parcels. Each parcel bottled ends in the same digit each year. Pirque for instance always ends in a zero: 2013 Lot #5o, 2014 Lot #6o, 2015 Lot #7o, 2016 Lot #8o, 2017 Lot #9o and so on...

What impact Old Vine Seal can have on world's oldest vineyards

What started way back in 2010 as a grassroots, volunteer effort by wine critic Jancis Robinson MW and her team to record all the vineyards in the world that qualify as old vines has developed into the full blown Old Vine Registry that now includes close to 5,000 producers. It has now introduced the OV Seal to give those producers the chance to promote, on their label, how old their vines are and help spread the word to wine drinkers about the importance and significance of old vines. Alder Yarrow, architect and manager of the OVR explains what he hopes the new seal can achieve.
